Rio Mare donates 100,000 tuna cans to needy families

The Italian canned tuna company Rio Mare, of the Bolton Alimentari group, has donated 100,000 cans of tuna to the Food Bank this year, 25 per cent more than in 2014.

This important achievement, according to the company, is the fruit of the efforts and generosity of thousands of consumers, who when buying Rio Mare products with a value of EUR 5 and registering on the site of the brand, have contributed to donate each can of tuna for needy families.

The donations are part of its campaign 'C'è un tonno per tutti' (There is tuna for all), developed from January to March across the country, with the participation of around 2,500 supermarkets and hypermarkets of the big chains, reported Agenparl.

The initiative, now in its second edition, was launched in collaboration with the Food Bank, to support the Italians in difficulty and help them purchase food in supermarkets that is more complete and balanced.

"As a company, for years we have been committed to promoting the principles of proper and balanced nutrition and to supporting the territory in which we operate, so we think it is essential to carry out support activities that can help families in need to respond adequately to their food needs," said Luciano Pirovano, CSR manager at Bolton Alimentari.

Meanwhile, Andrea Giussani, President of the Food Bank, pointed out: "At a time when the issue of food poverty in Italy feels strongly, to have food like tuna is very important to us; it enriches the diet of needy people for their contribution of essential proteins."

"Thanks to Bolton Alimentari, which for the second year specifically supports us on this front in the fight against food poverty in favour of the poorest in Italy," he added.

Since 2011 Rio Mare has supported the activities of the Food Bank, donating surplus production and products that can not be sold in outlets of retail. This commitment made it possible to donate about a million cans of tuna in the past two years.
