The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) has decided to temporarily suspend the certification as antibiotic-free farming centers granted to Nova Austral salmon company in the Magallanes Region.

The measure will remain in effect for the duration of an investigation initiated last week, after El Mostrador reported possible malpractice of the company related to adulterations of mortality reports in one of its centers in Magallanes.

SERNAPESCA Deputy director Marcela Lara, who leads the investigation, said that "the company was notified that no more antibiotic-free certifications will be issued, a voluntary measure implemented by the Service in 2016 in relation to crop centers that do not use antimicrobials in their productive cycle ".

"Although there is an evaluation prior to the issuance of these certifications, transparency and trust are important pillars that sustain the delivery process of this instrument," explained the official.

The investigation is currently in course  and covers both the request for information and on-site inspections.

Currently, in Chile there are 110 culture centers that are certified as free from the use of antibiotics.
