In its observer status, CALAMASUR seeks to foster transnational cooperation and focus on the preservation of the giant squid, a vital resource for both the marine ecosystem and the fishing economy in the region."

 

Various delegations from PSRFMO member countries have presented a series of initiatives to the Commission of this organization, for evaluation, discussion and subsequent implementation. Alfonso Miranda, president of CALAMASUR, assures that several of these proposals, which seek to improve inclusion and effectiveness in decision-making, promote the sustainability and management of the fishery, as well as reinforce surveillance in ports against illegal fishing, are aligned with the vision that CALAMASUR has promoted over time.

 

 

For Alfonso Miranda, it is imperative that member countries develop a unified and effective approach to giant squid management. CALAMASUR has anticipated its support for the following proposals raised by the various delegations, highlighting their relevance and the significant impact they could have.

 

One of the proposals advocates for the gradual implementation of the use of Spanish in PSRFMO Commission meetings, essential for comprehensive and effective participation in decision-making. Its implementation would encourage greater participation of scientists and managers representing Spanish-speaking fisheries within the convention.

 

On the other hand, given the challenges that seek the sustainability of the giant squid and the growing concern about the high concentration of fishing vessels in the convention area, especially near the jurisdictional waters of the South American countries, the creation of an area of research and management of the giant squid. This initiative seeks the annual collection and analysis of detailed information provided by vessels operating in this area, focusing on aspects such as interactions, transhipments, captures, and interruptions of satellite signals. Likewise, in order to strengthen port inspections and combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, a third proposal proposes an amendment to CMM 007-2022 (standard related to port inspections). This amendment seeks to achieve complete adoption of the Port State Measures (PSMA) by Member States and Cooperating Non-Contracting Parties (CNCP).

 

 

Finally, a fourth proposal, which seeks to improve the collection of data on events and bycatch, as well as achieve a minimally acceptable level of coverage, given that the current one is considered insufficient and does not align with the standards of other regional fisheries management organizations. is an amendment to CMM-18 on shipboard observers. This seeks to increase the percentage of observed fishing days to 10% in the giant squid fisheries in the convention area.

 

This week, delegations from PSRFMO member countries will debate these and other crucial proposals for approval. Its role is fundamental because the decisions made will directly influence the sustainable and responsible management of fishing resources in the South Pacific, impacting both the conservation of the marine ecosystem and the local economies dependent on fishing.

These are initiatives that not only seek to improve the conditions of the giant squid fishery, but also promote more sustainable and collaborative management. We trust that the delegations of the countries, especially the riparians, cooperate so that these are accepted, marking a positive milestone for the sustainability of this resource,” mentioned Alfonso Miranda.
