More than 300 professionals have already applied for jobs in the Spanish tuna fleet through its job intermediation platform 'Empleatún'

According to the fleet, success is due to working conditions, professional development possibilities, and internationalization

A total of 317 professionals have applied for employment in the Spanish tuna fleet during the first six months of operation of the digital labor intermediation platform “empleAtún”1, launched by the Organization of Associated Producers of Large Freezer Tuna Vessels (OPAGAC) last October.

According to this organization, the excellent reception of this initiative to incorporate new talent into the fleet is due to its position at the forefront of the global fishing sector both in terms of its operations and the socio-labor conditions that it guarantees and certifies with the seal Responsible Fishing Tuna. Likewise, job seekers value the professional development possibilities offered by this fleet, as well as its internationalization due to its presence in the three main oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian).

During this first semester of operation of the platform, the occupations that have registered the highest number of job offers have been those of skipper, chief and engineer officer, bridge officer, oiler, and cook. In this regard, it is worth remembering that this initiative is focused on replacing professionals in this fleet with a medium-high qualification who are between 42 and 50 years old. In total, OPAGAC's tuna fleet employs more than 2,400 professionals.

Furthermore, also as part of the “empleAtún” initiative, since last October, 1,112 students and qualified professionals have attended the 15 information days held in training centers to publicize the professional opportunities offered by this fleet. These more than 1,100 attendees represent 62% of the objective that the fleet had set for a year and a half, estimated at 1,800 participants.

The sessions have been carried out in Nautical Schools and Integrated Vocational Training Centers in Asturias (Gijón), Galicia (Vigo, Culleredo, Vilagarcía, Bueu, and Ribeira), and the Basque Country (Irún, Pasaia, and Bermeo), autonomous communities in which that the fleet is rooted in our country.

The next session will take place on April 18 at the Ferrol Nautical Fishing School. In addition, the fleet plans to expand the “empleAtún” information campaign to other autonomous communities with a fishing tradition such as Cantabria and Andalusia.

According to Julio Morón, managing director of OPAGAC, “the very satisfactory results obtained during the first six months of our employment initiative are the result of the enormous effort that our shipping companies have made to put the professionals who work in their fleet at the center of their business practices. This translates into the protection of their labor rights, above the requirements of international regulations, the guarantee of their well-being on board our ships, their continuous training, and the guarantee of professional development opportunities.”
