Redes de España Project Boosts Circular Economy and Green Jobs in Galicia with Cleanup and Training Events
(SPAIN, 10/1/2025)
Cepesca, CTAG, and FNCP Unite the Sector in Cangas (Pontevedra) to Raise Awareness on Marine Litter and Promote the Net Menders Profession
Madrid – The town of Cangas (Pontevedra) is set to become the epicenter of the circular economy and marine sustainability with the celebration of the ‘Tejer orillas’ (Weaving Shores) and ‘Tejer el cambio’ (Weaving Change) events on October 1 and 2. These activities are part of the Redes de España (Nets of Spain) project, a key initiative developed by the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (Cepesca), the Galicia Automotive Technology Centre (CTAG), and the National Federation of Fishermen's Guilds (FNCP).
The Redes de España project aims to establish an innovative model for the traceability, recycling, and valorization of discarded fishing nets and gear (ARPD). This effort proactively addresses current regulatory frameworks, including the EU Directive 2019/904 on single-use plastics and Law 7/2022 on waste, which enforce Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

October 1: ‘Weaving Shores’ at Nerga Beach
The first activity, ‘Tejer orillas’, will take place on Wednesday, October 1, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, and will consist of a cleanup and waste classification session at Nerga beach.
This action, which will see the active participation of the Amicos association, net menders (rederas), and shellfish gatherers (mariscadoras), has a dual objective:
-
Environmental Awareness: To raise alarm about the serious problem of marine litter, especially in sensitive areas like the Natura 2000 Network.
-
Promotion of Best Practices: To highlight and promote the entire waste management chain: collection, classification, and valorization (recycling).

October 2: ‘Weaving Change’ at Cangas Town Hall
On Thursday, October 2, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Cangas Town Hall will host the ‘Tejer el cambio’ event. This gathering will be used to present the objectives, challenges, and progress of the Redes de España project, focusing on human capital and innovation.
"The Redes de España project, following its dissemination and training sessions, takes a new step with these actions that focus on people and the importance of awareness and collaboration," stated Nadia Moalla, Head of Projects and Innovation at Cepesca. The initiative aims to realize the fishing sector's commitment to a real circular economy that simultaneously generates opportunities for green employment and technological development.
The meeting will include an informational workshop featuring net menders from Andalusia and Galicia to:
-
Disseminate the value and technical skills required for this traditional trade.
-
Publicize employment opportunities within the current context of the blue economy.
-
Raise awareness regarding gender equality in the sector.
Innovative Model: "From Boat to New Product" Traceability
The core of the project is its innovative traceability system, which has already been implemented. This system allows the buyer of the final recycled component to know the exact origin of the net or gear, identifying both the port of entry and the original vessel.
The management model includes:
-
Classification of different types of fishing gear and their materials.
-
Operational protocols for safe collection, storage, transport, and treatment.
-
Technical Analysis: CTAG is responsible for sample collection and analysis to determine recycling viability and research new uses for the material, ensuring its valorization.
The Redes de España project is executed in collaboration with the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Pleamar Program, and is co-financed by the European Union via the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF).
