Umios Acquires 25.1% Stake in Pataya Food Industries to Accelerate Asian Expansion
(JAPAN, 9/17/2026)
The Japanese group, formerly Maruha Nichiro, will acquire a 25.1% stake in one of Thailand’s leading producers of tuna products, shelf-stable foods, and pet food. The alliance combines Umios’s global network with Pataya Food’s manufacturing plants, brands, and distribution channels in Thailand and Vietnam.
TOKYO — Umios Corporation, together with its group company Kingfisher Holdings, has decided to acquire a 25.1% stake in Pataya Food Industries Limited (PFI), in a transaction designed to accelerate the Japanese group’s expansion into the Asian processed food market.
The Japanese company officially announced the operation on September 14, four days after Pataya Food Group announced in Thailand the entry of Umios as a new strategic shareholder. The investment amount and financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
PFI, founded in 1979 and headquartered in Bangkok, specializes in the production and marketing of shelf-stable products made primarily from tuna, as well as pet food. It operates both as an OEM manufacturer for third parties and under its own proprietary brands, maintaining production facilities in Thailand and Vietnam from which it supplies Asian and international markets. Its registered capital stands at 280 million baht (US$ 8.41 million).

The group’s brand portfolio includes Nautilus, Mongkut Talay, and Sea Crown in human foods, as well as Regalos and Remy in pet food. Pataya Food expects Umios’s entry to strengthen its core seafood business while accelerating expansion into higher-margin categories such as functional nutrition, health products, and pet food.
Thailand as a Regional Production Hub for Asia
Umios identifies Thailand as a strategic development and processing hub capable of supplying products globally. Through this alliance, the group aims to expand both its processed food portfolio and its Asian commercial channels, supporting the “glocal” strategy outlined in its long-term vision.

The operation combines highly complementary capabilities. PFI contributes manufacturing infrastructure, product development expertise, local consumer knowledge, proprietary brands, and established sales channels. Umios brings international expertise in wild capture, aquaculture, raw material sourcing, processing, and global distribution.
The Thai company also noted that the agreement is expected to support its target of achieving an average annual growth rate near 10% over the next three years, focusing on proprietary product development and the expanding health and pet food segments.

Beyond Traditional Tuna Processing
Although tuna remains a central industrial pillar for PFI, the rationale behind the operation extends further.
Umios aims to increase its exposure to consumer-ready processed foods and leverage a operational platform that combines OEM production with proprietary brand development. For the Japanese group, this represents a shift from a historical model centered on sourcing and processing of seafood toward direct engagement with end consumers in Asian markets.

The investment also aligns with Umios’s recent strategic initiatives to expand its pet care business and high-value-added product lines. PFI specifically identifies pet care and functional nutrition as two key growth areas stemming from the partnership.
At the same time, the Thai group retains a robust industrial foundation in seafood, creating potential synergies in raw material procurement, tuna product development, and commercial expansion across shared international markets.

Strategic Minority Investment Structure
The 25.1% acquisition does not grant Umios majority control of Pataya Food Industries. PFI will continue operating as a strategic partner within a collaborative framework where both companies leverage their combined commercial and industrial capabilities.
Umios has not released details regarding the transaction price, the precise equity split between Umios and Kingfisher Holdings, the target closing date, or specific corporate governance rights associated with the share package.
Consequently, the immediate financial impact of the transaction cannot yet be quantified.

However, the strategic significance remains clear: Umios secures a substantial position in a regional Asian platform featuring production plants in two countries, established brands, OEM capabilities, and simultaneous operations in human foods and pet care.
For the Japanese company, the transaction reinforces Thailand as a regional hub for processing and product development. For Pataya Food, it integrates one of the world's leading seafood and food groups as a strategic partner to accelerate its growth across Asia.

Umios、Pataya Food Industries
