Challenges for the export of Vietnamese aquatic products in 2024
(VIET NAM, 1/22/2024)
Ho Chi Minh City (VNA) - Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) lowered its aquatic products export value target for 2024 to $9.5 billion from its previous expectation of $10 billion , in the midst of many challenges in the sector.
With an aquaculture area of 1.3 million hectares, the national fish farming industry is expected to produce 9.22 million tons of products this year.
According to the MADR Fisheries Department, Vietnam earned $9.2 billion last year from seafood exports, equivalent to 92 percent of the planned plan and a reduction of 8% compared to 2022.

Total production in the sector was estimated at 9.05 million tons in 2023, an increase of 2% compared to the previous year.
Current problems in the fishing sector include the traceability of seafood to combat illegal exploitation and guarantee food safety on fishing vessels and ports.
In addition, aquatic product exports also face many barriers, such as animal welfare and carbon certificates to ensure environmental safety during the production process.
From 2024, the Department of Fisheries will continue to develop marine aquaculture and carry out scientific and technological solutions to increase the value of processed products.

From 2024, the Department of Fisheries will continue to develop marine aquaculture and carry out scientific and technological solutions to increase the value of processed products.
On the other hand, the slow recovery of the world economy, the high price of some inputs for the development of aquaculture and the higher cost of logistics services have put pressure on production.
These challenges affected Vietnam's seafood processing and export activities.
Meanwhile, the European Commission continues to maintain a yellow card warning for Vietnamese aquatic products.
According to Tran Dinh Luan, director of the Department of Fisheries, revenue from fishery exports decreased in 2023 as the industry faced challenges such as lack of standards and regulations for environmental monitoring and inadequate infrastructure in aquaculture areas.
The efficiency of capture activities is still low. Consumer demand was reduced in most markets, which caused the value of external sales to decline, he said.

Although the fishing industry is showing signs of recovery, there are still many difficulties in 2024, said Vuong Thi Oanh, an official with the Import and Export Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Against the backdrop of demand in China, the United States, Europe and Japan recovering in late 2023 and early 2024, Vietnam will remain a potential supplier of aquatic products to those markets.
However, competition will continue to increase with countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and China for processed products and with Ecuador for regular products, she noted.
