Future competence and recruitment needs in the norwegian seafood industry
(NORWAY, 1/18/2023)
The seafood industry is one of the few industries with the potential to increase export earnings to Norway. Access to in-demand expertise is of significant importance.
However, the industry sometimes has major challenges in meeting current skills needs. One in two companies is currently experiencing recruitment problems. The demand for expertise does not appear to be decreasing in the coming years either. The future competence needs in the seafood industry span many fields of study at all levels of education.
The need for leadership skills is particularly prominent. So is the need to recruit process and machine operators and candidates for primary economic occupations, such as fishermen and aquaculture workers. The seafood industry is also diverse, which is clearly evident in the different skills and recruitment needs between the fisheries, aquaculture, processing industry and pure sales companies (including exporters). This is shown in a recent report from the FHF project Future skills needs in the Norwegian seafood industry, which was carried out by Møreforsking, NCE Blue Legasea and ÅKP.
