Canning firm sanctioned for not reporting 'properly'
(COLOMBIA, 11/4/2013)
The Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) -- on appeal – sanctioned the firm Colomboespañola de Conservas Limitada for failing to provide adequate information to consumers regarding the content announced on the can 'Atún Isabel Lomitos en Agua.'
The fine amounts to COP 176.85 million (USD 93,770), equivalent to 300 minimum legal monthly wages prevailing in the country.
The SIC, as part of its inspection, supervision and control duties performed an administrative visit at the distribution spot and the warehouse owned by the company in order to verify if the announced and sold content corresponded to the actual one sent to the consumer or not.
According to the inspectors who visited the company on 19 November, 2012, the reported net weight on the front of the prepackaged product was 80 grams. This content included the weight of the product and the water but it did not state the corresponding drained weight.
In this regard, the SIC stressed that the national and international norms on the legal metrology require that, when a product is packaged in liquid it must also clearly indicate the drained weight on the label of the main side, SIC reported in a press release.
The authority checked a sample of 125 cans of ‘Atún Isabel Lomitos en Agua' and found that the announced content on the front of the packaging of the cans did not correspond to the actual packaged product.
The company has already taken corrective measures incorporating the drained weight of the product on the label.
