Fish oil from Pesquera Diamante’s anchovies and mackerels fleet certified Friend of the Sea sustainable.

Fish Oil from Pesquera Diamante Certified Sustainable

  (PERU, 10/1/2014)

Pesquera Diamante – a major processor of fishmeal and fish oil, canned food, fresh and frozen products from Peru – has successfully undergone Friend of the Sea audit.

Anchovies, chub and Jack mackerels are fished by the approved purse seiners fleet.

32 vessels of the total fleet (45 vessels) are mainly dedicated to the fishing of anchovy for the indirect human consumption; and 15 are equipped for the fishing of jack mackerel and mackerel destined for Direct Human Consumption.

Pesquera Diamante owns 32 vessels, dedicated to the fishing of anchovies and mackerels, and 8 production sites in Peru.

The oil is exported crude, semi-refined or refined, in different presentations: tank-containers, 1 MT bines, cylinders and flexi-tanks, in accordance with customers’ requirements.

A satellite monitoring system controls the activities of the entire fleet (navigation, capture and unloading), to verify the respect of Marine Protection Areas. All data is then recorded in a database.

Manuel Salazar.

Both Peruvian anchovy and mackerel are assessed as not overexploited in the target fishing area (FAO area n° 87 of the South East Pacific Ocean).

Endangered species are not by-caught by the fishery as the catch targets single species schools.

Onsite audit confirmed that fishing gears comply with national regulations. A well managed chain of custody ensures no mixing between certified and non-certified products.

“We are pleased Pesquera Diamante has been awarded the Friend of the Sea certification as this further confirms our company’s engagement to marine conservation,” states Manuel Salazar, CEO of Pesquera Diamante.
